St. Lawrence CRC Celebrates 30 Years of Service!

The St Lawrence Community Recreation Centre (CRC) at 230 The Esplanade is celebrating 30 years of service to the community this September!

Founding members of the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood Association were among the local residents who helped to make the St. Lawrence CRC a reality.

As part of this 30th Anniversary celebration, the Advisory Council for the St. Lawrence CRC is collecting written documents and photos that reflect the special memories of the many people who are or have used the Centre throughout the years. We hope to include your memories as well.

This collection of written and visual memorabilia will be displayed in the lobby of the Centre in the weeks leading up to the official celebration on Saturday, September 17th 2022 throughout the day (the Centre opens at 7:45 a.m. and closes at 7 p.m. on Saturday).

I was so pleased to see the story about the Rec Centre Anniversary.
There are many folks who made the Advisory Council tick back in the late 1990/early 2000s who should be acknowledged. These would include Ron Monteith who kept getting us involved: Dorothy Creaser who started the Senior’s Club with help from Ann Taylor, Sheila Peart, Margaret McQuaid and many others; Dawn Murray and Fay Ali who started the sponsorship program for the kids soccer and T-ball teams; and a host of others like Abdi Nur, Jim Dalziel, Paul Parker, Halima Mohammed, Helen Marangos, Judy Pearse, youth reps Tyler Murray Alex Bershadsky , and of course the skipper, Doug Maybank.
We dreamed big. As a result there was an annual bus trip for seniors, summer camp for youth, a newsletter, and our kids played with pride in uniforms. We also set up free computer terminals even before the Library.
The pool always was lively. At one point, the lane swimmers and morning aquatics folks were at odds over a 1C difference in the pool water temperature. It was easier and somewhat more amusing to address a request for swimming in the buff by a local naturist group.
Thanks for the story and to all those residents and volunteers who are contributing positively to make St Lawrence a great place to live.
