Historic Plaques
Under the Ontario Heritage Act, there are two ‘levels’ of protection for buildings:
The SLNA Heritage Committee has recently surveyed all the Listed and Designated buildings in our area and has been working with Heritage Toronto to add plaques to more of them.
Unfortunately, Heritage Toronto has a huge backlog of buildings needing new or replacement plaques and receives very limited funding from the City. Over the past few years the SLNA has donated funds to Heritage Toronto for many plaques and has worked with our Councillor’s Office to allocate Section 37 “heritage commemoration” funding towards adding more.
There are approximately 50 individually Listed and 100 Designated buildings in our area (approximately 50, both Listed and Designated, have plaques). Ideally all Designated and most Listed buildings would be plaqued. There is a listing of all Designated and Listed buildings on the City’s Heritage Register.
Under the Ontario Heritage Act, there are two ‘levels’ of protection for buildings:
- "Listed" describes properties for which City Council has adopted a recommendation that it be included on the Heritage Inventory. These recommendations are based on criteria that relate to architecture, history, and neighbourhood context. Listing and inclusion on the Inventory is a clear statement that the City would like to see the heritage attributes of these properties preserved.
- “Designated” is a higher level of protection that has been assigned to approximately 4500 properties City-wide which are either individually Designated or are located within a Heritage Conservation District designated under Part V of the Act. Individually designated properties are identified by a by-law number.
