Happy New Year from the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood Association Waste Reduction Group (WRG)!
2021 was a big year for Toronto - Toronto’s Updated Climate Strategy was adopted by City Council on
Dec 15, 2021.
The TransformTO Net Zero Strategy sets a new target of net zero emission by 2040, making Toronto one of only three big cities in North America with a net zero by 2040 target.
To reach this target by 2040, here are some of TransformTO’s 2030 goals:

2021 was also a very big year for the Waste Reduction Group
In 2020 we had a one-day Donation drive at the St. Lawrence Market Farmer’s Tent to help our residents divert waste and collect donated items for the Salvation Army. We collected 7 truckloads of donations !
In 2021, our REmarket was a much larger event over two days.
Despite the pandemic, it was a huge success.
REmarket diverted over 50 skids of usable items from being thrown in the garbage. That is almost 20,000 pounds of diverted waste!
The Salvation Army picked up 45 skids, Renewed Computer Technologies (RCT) picked up 6 skids of electronics and Homes First picked up 1 skid of donations for 45 the Esplanade.
We also had volunteer fixers from the Repair Café repairing household items and volunteers from Charlie’s Freewheels repairing and tuning up bicycles. We are very excited that we were able to include Repairs in addition to collecting donations and hope to continue this in future events!
The WRG has big plans for 2022.
We are planning a REmarket Donation Day that will take place on Thursday, February 10, 2022.
Don’t throw out your usable goods! Save them for our REmarket.
More information will be coming very soon.
When things are safer we will be planning more larger events.

Information on PCR testing changes and COVID-19 vaccinations from Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam's newsletter:
On December 31, 2021, the Province of Ontario announced changes to eligibility for PCR testing, which will now be strictly limited to symptomatic individuals who work at, live in, or visit high-risk settings such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, shelters (and more) along with any high-risk contacts to the aforementioned groups during confirmed or suspected outbreaks.
Members of the public outside of the previous groups are not eligible for publicly-funded PCR testing and are asked to instead isolate themselves. If you are vaccinated and have symptoms of COVID-19, then you are now only required to isolate for five days after your symptoms start. If you are unvaccinated or immunocompromised, you must continue to isolate for 10 days.
The transmission of COVID-19 is airborne. Please, if you are able, wear a mask that is tight-fitting and high quality such as N95 KN95, stay home, and if you are able to get vaccinated as that is your greatest protection. Everyone 18 years or older is eligible for both vaccine doses, and their booster shot. Please go as soon as you’re able. You can book your appointment through the Provincial Booking Portal or by calling the Provincial Vaccine Contact Centre at 1-833-943-3900 to book over the phone. This line is available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., 7 days a week.
Children between the ages of 5 and 12 years old are now eligible to receive their vaccination. Book your appointments today! You can do so by booking through the COVID-19 vaccination portal or by calling the Provincial Vaccine Contact Centre at 1-833-943-3900 (TTY for people who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or speech-impaired: 1-866-797-0007).
