In 1820, in a back room of the popular Franks Hotel, the first theatrical performance made up entirely of local actors took place. That first play was a production of 'The School for Scandal' by Richard Sheridan. Long gone, Franks Hotel stood facing Market Lane Park just north of Front between Jarvis and Church Sts. Back then you entered the theatre using an outside staircase approximately where the household cleaning supply aisle of the Metro Grocery Store in Market Square stands today. The first manager of Frank's was a Mr. Talbot and his wife Mrs. Talbot was the first star of the Toronto stage with her most famous role being 'Little Pickles' in a comedy of the same name. Women who appeared on stage in the late 18th and early 19th century often had to use the prefix 'Mrs.' rather than their first name so the audience would know that she was a “respectable” married women and had the permission of her husband to appear on stage. Gratuities are welcome ($10 and $20 suggested). The SLNA learned late on Thursday that the City has halted the reconstruction of Wellington Street between Church and Yonge Streets until April 2022. The project resumed at a brisk pace this spring, but has slowed markedly in recent days.
Unfortunately, the approval process has not been able to keep pace with the construction process, and the contractor has run out of work. This time, it is Toronto Hydro’s approval of the placement of street lighting and traffic signal poles and infrastructure that has not yet been finalized. The contractor began demobilizing the site on Friday. Material and equipment is being removed until next spring. The remaining work is expected to take three months to complete. This is most regrettable, and an indication that this complex project, discussion and planning of which has been ongoing for over ten years, is still not working as well as the neighbourhood has a right to expect. It is regrettable because a portion of our neighbourhood will remain torn up for yet another summer …and winter …and spring. It is regrettable because the hundreds of thousands of dollars of additional cost resulting from this latest delay could be much better spent on almost anything else – adding more heritage lighting being just one of them. A smidgeon of a silver lining… This will allow eight or more restaurants on Wellington and Front Streets to open their CafeTO patios for the full season. They do deserve a break. Regrettable that it had to come this way. While this specific decision may be irreversible, SLNA will nevertheless be reaching out to both City Council and Staff for another round of discussions directed toward improving the outcomes for future projects of this nature. We will keep you informed. SLNA Community Meeting Minutes The SLNA uploads to the Association's website minutes of each monthly SLNA meeting. Those minutes can be viewed online or downloaded here.
