As part of the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood Association's ongoing 40th Anniversary activities, we are pleased to be partnering with local arts organization Jamii to create a new landmark mural for our community that both local organizations hope will bring pride and joy to all residents of the neighbourhood. This new landmark will be located on a site recently approved by the City of Toronto and that site is the unique exterior wall of the pool area at the St Lawrence Community Recreation Centre, 230 The Esplanade (beside Market Lane Public School). Jamii has invited popular artist Darwin Peters to lead the creation of a distinctive mural on this exterior section of the Community Centre. Darwin is an Indigenous artist from Pikangikum First Nation who visited our neighbourhood last September (see photo above). Darwin will be supported by local artists Kseniya Tsoy and Andrew Patterson, and will be assisted by local youth.
While Darwin is working on the mural design, the community is invited to contribute ideas and suggestions for the vision of this special mural for our neighbourhood. The general theme for this mural is MEDICINE (mashkiki). This is a word that can bring to mind many different ideas, understandings and perspectives and we hope all members of the community will share their ideas on this theme with us. Please send suggested colour palettes, ideas for elements to be included in the design, your own drawings, stories we can include in the design and anything else that comes to mind! Your ideas and suggestions can be sent to Isorine Marc at isorine@jamii.ca before May 28th 2023. A design draft of the mural will be presented at the SLNA meeting on May 31st. We hope to have many voices from our community reflected in this beautiful 40th Anniversary project that will be unveiled at 6 p.m. on June 21st. This project is supported by the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood Association, Jamii, Canada Council for the Arts, Canadian Heritage, Rama Gaming House, City of Toronto and Emblem Developments.

The birthplace of the human race, a land impossibly rich in natural resources, of ancient cultures, storied trade routes, stunning landscapes, and incomparable wildlife. That continent is Africa – the second-largest land mass on the planet. This vast expanse is home to 54 countries and many diverse peoples speaking more than 1500 languages – from Arabic on the northern coast to the Niger-Congo and Bantu tongues of the Subsaharan region and the Malagasy of the east-coast island of Madagascar. Blessed with a young population, Africa is undergoing phenomenal transformative development across many social and economic spheres. One of these is the evolution of a bold and innovative fashion and textile industry, whose presence is increasingly important on the global stage. The Cathedral Church of St. James invites you to join us in celebrating Africa’s traditional and contemporary fashion in African Fashion: Many Threads – One Cloth. Using design and couture as a starting point, this exhibit will take close look at the continental mosaic through the lens of its vibrant textile industry and uniquely African couture. It will explore the impact of its distinctive fashion on the fabric of its domestic economy and on the international fashion stage – an influence increasingly seen on the runways of Paris, Milan, and New York. Pictured above: Members of the St. James Cathedral African Fashion Initiative Committee -"Many Threads - One Cloth" The exhibit will also weave in many other aspects of African life: cuisine, music, dance, story-telling, and artefacts. In addition to a live fashion show featuring African textiles and couture, there will be a series of expert lectures. These will outline Africa’s ethnic and linguistic diversity, changing demographics and rapidly transforming societies, and economic/ecological challenges. This exhibit is a collaboration of many dedicated volunteers. Please join us in our salute to this phenomenal continent. SLNA Events Calendar This is actually a misleading headline as the SLNA Events Calendar is far from new, but it isn't being used by most of our community so in a way it is new to many of our readers! If you're trying to find out what wonderful event, performance, exhibit or other activity is happening in the St. Lawrence neighbourhood or surrounding area in the downtown Toronto core, we invite you to vist the SLNA Calendar at this link: https://www.slna.ca/calendar.html. You can also SUBMIT events or activities you are aware of directly to our calendar using the tool on the website. Your submission will be reviewed and published if appropriate. Appropriate submissions are open to general audiences, located primarily in the St. Lawrence neighbourhood but may include surrounding areas like the Distillery District, The Lakefront, Corktown, Cabbage Town and other downtown Toronto core neighbourhoods (depending on the event/activity). For example a popular exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum could be included in our calendar because it is the kind of high profile downtown family event that residents in our neighbourhood would appreciate. Jane’s Walk is an annual festival of free, community-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs—a journalist, author, theorist, activist, and proud Torontonian. On the first weekend of May every year, Jane’s Walk festivals take place in hundreds of cities around the world. Jane’s Walks encourage people to share stories about their neighbourhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours. The Jane's Walk festival is largely volunteer-run and donor-funded. Since the festival's launch in 2007, Jane's Walks have been held in nearly 500 cities across 6 continents.
