In 1994, Deputy Mayor Pam McConnell became a City Councillor and spent countless hours working with residents and groups to build healthy communities for all Torontonians. This present term marked Deputy Mayor McConnell's seventh at Council. She served as Deputy Mayor and was selected by Mayor Tory in 2015 as the champion of the City's Poverty Reduction Strategy. She also served as a member of the Government Management Committee, the Affordable Housing Committee, and the Toronto and East York Community Council as well as several other boards, committees and Business Improvement Areas. As City Councillor for Ward 28 (Toronto Centre-Rosedale), she oversaw many important city building projects such as the revitalization of Regent Park, including the recently opened aquatic centre and central park. She worked on improvements to the St. Lawrence Market Precinct and secured funding for the new North Market building. Since 1999, she represented Toronto at the Board of Directors of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and also represented Toronto as an Executive member at United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), an international organization of local governments that advocates and shares best practices among municipalities. Some of her most significant work at FCM was as a founding member of the Standing Committee on Increasing Women's Participation in Municipal Government. In 1997, she received an award from the Duke of Edinburgh for her work with inner city youth. In 2013, Pam received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal, in recognition of her decades of public service.
