On behalf of the SLNA Waste Reduction Group

Our sincere thanks to everyone for making the SLNA Waste Reduction Group’s 12th REmarket a success!!

Below is the outcome of our work together at REmarket #12:
  • We had 52 individuals volunteering at this event; many of you worked multiple shifts over the 2 days
  • We were so overwhelmed with donations and FreeMarket visitors, we were unable to get a proper count.
  • 52 skids of donations (approx. 7,825 kg) went to The Salvation Army (compared to 34 skids at the previous REmarket in Oct)!
  • 7 skids (1,705 kg) of electronic e-waste along with some laptops/tablets/electronic items for reuse were collected by Renewed Computer Technology (RCTO)
  • Repair Café Toronto with their 42 volunteers registered 124 visitors and 167 items for repair
  • 13 bikes were brought in for small repairs to be done by CultureLink Bike Hub’s 5 volunteers

Through our ever-expanding REuse, REcycling, and Disposal programs, the following items were collected (number and types of items continued to increase):

  • 202 pairs of prescription glasses for redistribution by Optic Zone

    • 19.6 kg of oral care waste, 338 units of razor products, 137 water filters, 473 empty coffee bean bags and 1069 coffee pods went to various TerraCycle Recycling programs
    • 62 kg of empty cosmetic containers went to the pact collective recycling program
    • 1319 prescription bottles to be redistributed for reuse by Good Shepherd and Street Health and recycling by Plastic Flux

    • 2,208 single use masks for recycling by TerraCycle via Canada Strong Masks
    • 368 black take-away containers and prescription bottles will be recycled by Plastic Flux
    • 3,830 contact lenses and blister packs went to TerraCycle
    • 8,480 plastic milk and bread tags collected for Danielle Cares For Chairs
    • 20,260 cigarette butts were dropped off by residents for recycling by TerraCycle
    • NEW – 790 aluminum can tabs collected for The Robert Hampson Tabs for Kids Fund
    • NEW – 1,475 plastic mesh bags for upcycling by K. There Co.
    • NEW – 48 glucose sensor monitors to electronic waste

Special thanks to The City of Toronto’s Solid Waste Management and Jamii for joining us at REmarket.

TTC Notice: King St. E. and Church

From the TTC:

Dear St. Lawrence Neighbourhood Association,

From May to the end of August 2025, the City of Toronto and TTC will replace the 100-year-old watermain and renew the aging streetcar tracks at the King Street East and Church Street intersection. While the first phase of this work will require lane restrictions at the intersection, phase two will need a full intersection closure.

The TTC must divert 504/304 King and 503/303 Kingston Rd streetcars onto Queen Street East (River Street to Church Street) and onto Queen Street West (York Street to Spadina Avenue). These streetcar routes will also divert via the recently completed Queen Streetcar Diversion, eastbound: York Street, Adelaide Street, and Church Street and westbound: Church Street, Richmond Street, and York Street. Please see the diversion maps provided below.

Several measures to prioritize transit will be required throughout the construction project to keep 102,900 daily TTC customers and all vehicular traffic moving downtown (particularly along Queen Street).

The City of Toronto and TTC are planning the following temporary transit priority measures, which will be vital to avoid severe congestion:

  • An extension to “No Stopping” prohibitions, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., daily, on Queen Street (Spadina to River) and Richmond Street (York to Church), essentially, an additional five hours (10 a.m. and 3 p.m.) of ‘no stopping’ on weekdays on these streets
  • An extension to “No Stopping” prohibitions to operate anytime (24/7) on Adelaide (York to Church) and York Street (Queen to Adelaide)
  • New “No stopping” prohibitions between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends, on all the streets mentioned in the preceding two bullets, as transit ridership is similar and, in many cases, higher than on weekdays
  • An extension to existing left turn restrictions to prevent a single vehicle from delaying all traffic and transit  along the Queen Street corridor
  • New left turn prohibitions at:
    • Queen Street East and Jarvis Street, eastbound and westbound left turns
    • Queen Street East and Parliament Street, eastbound and westbound left turns
    • Queen Street East and Victoria Street, westbound left turns
    • Queen Street West and Soho Street, eastbound left turns
    • Queen Street West and University Avenue, eastbound and westbound left turns
    • Spadina Avenue and Queen Street West, eastbound and westbound left turns
  • A restriction on CaféTO curbside patios on Queen Street (Spadina to River), Richmond Street (York to Church), Adelaide (York to Church) and York Street (Queen to Adelaide)

Please note that these measures are temporary and will be reversed once the construction at the King/Church intersection is completed.
