EAST BAYFRONT SEWER PROJECT
The new East Bayfront sanitary sewer is now (almost) completely operational and runs from the new George Brown health sciences building on Queen’s Quay and Lower Sherbourne to the sewage pumping station on Scott Street and The Esplanade. It was twined with the existing sewer and The Esplanade section needed to be operational before the GBC building opened as the old sewer in that area was already over-loaded. The whole project was completed in sections.
1. The Esplanade from Scott Street to Lower Jarvis The sewer work on The Esplanade from Scott Street to Lower Jarvis (including a new water-main between Scott and Church) was completed by late June 2012. Complete restoration (and some streetscape improvements) to the section from Scott to Church were supposed to begin in September 2012 so that the restaurants and bars could have a fairly complete summer season. Restoration, also with some improvements, on the section from Church Street to Lower Jarvis was supposed to start in August 2012.
Though the restoration plans - which are partly funded by the local BIA as they include improvements - were finalised, no restoration work started because Toronto Hydro could not schedule their underground re-wiring of the street-lighting (really!). As of December 2012 it has been announced that the City has taken over the restoration part of this project and that it will start at Market Street in August 2013 (Hydro having been instructed to install the new street-lights before that.) Restoration of The Esplanade will be done in sections, and should take about 8 weeks in total.
Lower Jarvis from Wilton Street to the rail bridge. With the exception of a main sewer junction at Lower Jarvis and Wilton, this section of sewer was completed in fall 2011. The work at Wilton was completed in December 2012 and full restoration of the road will be done by the City, probably in 2013.
Lower Jarvis Street from immediately north of the rail bridge to the south side of Lake Shore Blvd. This section is currently on hold due to the complexity of digging under the rail bridge. Apparently the existing sewer is able to handle the load in this section.
Lower Jarvis from Lake Shore Blvd to Queen's Quay. This section is now complete, restoration by the City will occur in 2013.
Queen's Quay. Lower Jarvis to Lower Sherbourne. Work was completed in June 2012. The street will be, partly, restored as WT works on the Martin Goodman trail in late fall 2012
Road (and other) Works Ahead!
The following information has been received from the City and Councillor Pam McConnell's office - other planned street projects will be added as we learn of them.
Up to 2011 the City published MAPS of most of the City work.
From 2012 they have unveiled a new, and better, product T.O.INView. See the 2012 and 2013 maps HERE.
2012 Construction - still continuing!
* Scott Street. Scott Street Pumping Station Upgrade & Rehabilitation. This City project will continue to early 2013. Information HERE.
2013 and 2014 Construction
Berkeley Street from King Street to The Esplanade will be resurfaced.
Front Street East:
A new water main and sewer east of Sherbourne Street (to Cherry Street) was completed in 2011. Full street restoration was completed east of Parliament Street in June 2012.
Water main replacement from Jarvis Street to Sherbourne Street was completed by August 2012.
In spring 2013 Toronto Hydro will start work to install better pedestrian street lighting.
In July 2013 the City will start full restoration of Front Street (road and sidewalks) from Jarvis to Parliament. Streetscape improvements will include bump-outs at George, Frederick, Princess and Berkeley and a median from Jarvis to George. In parts the sidewalks will be widened and additional trees will be planted. As a part of this work, a new water main is due to be installed on PRINCESS STREET - from Front to King. (Full rebuilding of the Front/Sherbourne intersection will occur with the 2014 work on Sherbourne/Lower Sherbourne.)
* Lower Sherbourne Street from Front Street East to Rail Bridge / Lakeshore Blvd.
and Scadding Avenue
Installation of a new sewer from Front to Lake Shore Blvd will occur in early 2013. At the same time a new water main will be installed on SCADDING AVENUE from Princess Street to Lower Sherbourne. (A new water main was installed on the eastern part of Scadding in 2011.)
GO Transit will repair and upgrade the rail bridge in summer 2013 and in the fall of 2013 or winter 2013/14 Toronto Hydro will bury most of their wires.
Finally, starting in spring 2014 major road reconstruction (including installation of new sidewalk on the missing link on the east side) and the installation of separated bike lanes (continuing those installed north of King Street in fall 2012) will be done.
Reconstruction and realignment from the rail bridge to Queen's Quay which will include reconstruction of access from/to Gardiner Expressway, including removal of right turn channel south of the rail bridge and improvements to the exits from the Gardiner, will also be done in 2014.
As part of this work the intersection of Front and Lower Sherbourne will be rebuilt.
CHURCH (The Esplanade to Front), SCADDING (Princess to Hahn) and LOMBARD (Victoria to Church) are scheduled to be resurfaced in 2012. SCADDING and LOMBARD were completed and the work on CHURCH has been postponed to 2013 when The Berczy condos will be completed.
Market Street. In spring 2013 the developer of the buildings ion the west side of Market Street will start streetscape improvements on the west side of the street. The City will eventually (2013 or 2014) do similar work on the east side of the street.
Richmond Street. From late 2013 to late 2014 the City will be laying a new watermain on Richmond Street east of Sherbourne Street. When this is completed the street will be resurfaced.
Wilton Street from Lower Jarvis to Market Streets will be resurfaced and the old rail line will (finally!) be removed.
2014 work planned
In 2014 or 2015 a Toronto Water project on Wellington Street East from Church to Yonge followed by new streetcar tracks, new sidewalks and repaving. The BIA and the City have plans to improve the 'streetscape' on Wellington Street East as part of this project.
Lower Sherbourne Street Full restoration and new separated cycle paths from rail bridge to King Street will occur in 2014 - see above.

Cherry Street and West Don Lands
Apart from the work being done in the West Don Lands itself (see Waterfront Toronto site) significant work is being done on Cherry Street. When completed, in 2013, the 504 streetcar will have a branch running down Cherry Street from King Street to the railway bridge. The streetcar tracks will be laid as part of this project but it is now expected that the line will not open until after the Pan Am Games in 2015. As of December 2012, WT say that Cherry Street from Eastern Avenue to Lake Shore Blvd. and Old Eastern Avenue west of St Lawrence Street will remain closed until July 2013.
*******************************************************************************************************************************
The TTC also has plans
2013 Replacement of streetcar track on Richmond from Church to York and electrical work on Church and Victoria.
2014 or 2015 Replacement of streetcar track on Wellington from Church to York (including Church south of King).
2014 Replacement of streetcar tracks on Victoria from Adelaide to Dundas.
By 2014 there will also be a NEW streetcar line on Cherry Street (see above) from King Street south to the railway Though this will not open until after the 2015 Pan-Am Games, the track on Cherry s being laid in 2013 as part of the reconstruction of Cherry Street.
Council are discussing transit priorities on Queen`s Quay East .and, maybe, a new streetcar line on Queen's Quay East from Bay (Union Station) to Parliament will be constructed to serve the new Bayside area.
